ISO 1928 Bomb Calorimetry: Getting Arbitration-Grade Results Every Time

Traceability starts with benzoic acid

Under ISO 1928 and ASTM D5865 the effective heat capacity of your bomb calorimeter must be certified against benzoic acid CRM. A quality instrument holds its heat capacity within 0.2 % across a year; if your monthly checks drift more than that, the problem is usually water dosing or bomb seals, not electronics.

Why automatic water dosing matters

The inner-bucket water mass enters the calculation directly. Volumetric-cup metering keeps it constant to a fraction of a gram run-to-run, which is why automatic calorimeters show tighter RSD (≤0.15 %) than manual bucketing ever can.

Bomb maintenance for biomass and SRF

Chlorine and alkali in biomass and solid recovered fuels attack standard bombs. Corrosion-resistant coated bombs with triple-thread closures tolerate these matrices; flush and weigh the bomb weekly to catch corrosion before it biases results.
